Progress Over Perfection
Building healthy habits has a way of exposing how we think about success.
Most of us start with good intentions. We make a plan, buy healthier groceries, decide we’re going to exercise more, and tell ourselves that this time will be different. For a while, everything goes well. Then life gets busy, we miss a workout, grab fast food on the way home, or let a few days turn into a few weeks.
Before long, it feels like we’re back where we started.
If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “I guess I just don’t have the discipline,” you’re not alone. I’ve had those thoughts too. But over the years, I’ve become convinced that the problem usually isn’t one bad choice. It’s the story we begin telling ourselves because of that one choice.
Healthy Habits Aren't Built on Perfect Days
Somewhere along the way, many of us started believing that healthy living is an all-or-nothing pursuit. We think we’re either “on track” or we’ve failed. If we eat one unhealthy meal, we feel like we’ve ruined the day. If we miss a few workouts, we tell ourselves we’ll start over next week.
The problem with that mindset is that life doesn’t cooperate.
There will always be busy weeks, unexpected interruptions, vacations, celebrations, illnesses, and stressful seasons. If our definition of success requires everything to go according to plan, we’ll spend a lot of our lives feeling like we’ve failed.
That’s why I think progress is a much better goal than perfection.
Progress leaves room for real life. It reminds us that one choice doesn’t define us. What matters most is what we choose next.
Small Choices Shape Our Lives
One thing I’ve noticed, both in my own journey and in the lives of people I’ve worked with, is that we tend to underestimate the power of ordinary choices.
We look for dramatic changes because they feel significant. But most lasting change doesn’t happen that way.
It happens when we go for a walk even though we don’t feel like it. When we prepare lunch instead of grabbing fast food. When we choose to go to bed on time. When we drink water instead of another soda.
None of those choices seems particularly important in the moment. But repeated over days, weeks, and months, they become healthy habits. Those habits begin shaping our routines, and our routines eventually shape the direction of our lives.
That’s why I talk so much about small choices. They’re rarely exciting in the moment, but they’re often the reason lasting change happens.
This Is Why the Five Pillars Matter
One of the reasons I believe so strongly in the Five Pillars is that they help us move beyond all-or-nothing thinking. Healthy living isn’t about getting every area of life exactly right. It’s about faithfully strengthening the whole person, one choice at a time.
Some days, the biggest win might be choosing a healthier meal. Other days, it might be getting to bed earlier because we know we’re running on empty. Sometimes the best thing we can do is spend a few minutes reflecting on why we’ve been struggling instead of simply trying harder.
The pillars work together because life works that way. Strengthening one area often makes it easier to grow in another. That’s why I encourage people to focus on whole-person wellness instead of chasing perfection in one area of life.
Keep Moving Forward
If you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to get healthy, you’ll probably be waiting for a long time. Life isn’t going to stop being busy. There will always be another challenge, another interruption, or another reason to put things off.
Instead of waiting for the perfect circumstances, start with one choice.
Not ten.
Not twenty.
One.
Maybe it’s taking a walk after dinner. Maybe it’s preparing tomorrow’s lunch tonight. Maybe it’s turning your phone off a little earlier so you can get more sleep.
It doesn’t have to be a dramatic change. It just has to be the next faithful step.
Something to Think About...
When you think about your health journey, do you spend more time focusing on the choices you’ve gotten wrong or the progress you’ve already made?
What would change if you measured success by your willingness to keep going instead of expecting yourself to be perfect?

Stephanie, this is a great reminder for me because it’s easy for me to see how I messed up the plan by something I did or circumstances that I didn’t control.
Instead of treating it as data, I get down on myself which can open the door to an attack.
I have to tell myself, ok that did not go as expected. Take time to reflect on how it can go better. Implement system that will be put in place if a situation like that happens again.
Just give yourself some grace! We are all just works in progress!
