Invictus Tenet #1: Love
A tenet is a belief that is generally held to be true, especially when that belief is held in common by members of an organization. It is an idea that is very important to a group, and at Invictus we have 12 tenets. These 12 words are comprised of the 9 Fruits of the Spirit plus three additional words that we believe are integral to becoming a warrior. We have paired each tenet with a Bible verse that we believe best conveys the application of that tenet within a warrior mindset.
Our 12 tenets are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, integrity, perseverance, and respect. In this blog post, we’re talking about love.
What is LOVE?
Love has a lot of different meanings in the English language. It can mean an intense feeling of deep affection, a great interest and pleasure in something, or to like or enjoy something very much. We talk about loving things, like a favorite sweater or song. We talk about loving places like a park or a vacation spot. We even talk about loving foods like ice cream or chocolate. Just stop and think how many times you’ve said, “I love _____ so much!” in the last 24 hours. I know I’m guilty of it. I say it way more than I care to admit.
You see, when we throw around a word as commonly as we do the word love, it starts to lose some of its meaning. The reality of it is this: we can never feel the same level of emotion for a sweater or for chocolate that we feel for another person. And that’s where the distinction comes in. The word love in all those examples I listed before is referring to a feeling. We feel strongly about those things, so we say that we love them.
But… when we talk about the tenet of love, we are talking about something completely different.
What does love mean to us?
The kind of love we’re talking about, and the kind of love we want to live out is not a feeling. It’s an action. And it can be defined as this: giving someone what they need the most, when they deserve it the least, even if it comes with a great personal cost to us.
This kind of love is sacrificial, generous, and completely blind to the deservedness of the recipient.
This is how we are called to love others because this is exactly how Jesus loves us. He gave us what we needed the most (grace, mercy, and forgiveness), when we deserved it the least (we were still sinners), at great personal cost to Him (it cost Him His life). Jesus showed us the ultimate example of love when He died on the cross to save us, and now we are called to emulate that love in response to that gift.
The way we are called to love the Lord is different, and we can learn about it by looking at Mark 12:30.
Mark 12:30
In this verse, Jesus implores us to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” It’s a profound call to wholehearted devotion and a principle that resonates deeply with our beliefs at Invictus where we aim to develop the mind, heart, body, and spirit to create unconquerable warriors. Let’s dive into this verse and look at each piece of it more deeply.
1. Heart – Love from the Depths:
One of the things we believe at Invictus is that the heart is the core of our being and who we are. Similarly, Mark 12:30 urges us to love God with all our heart. This kind of love is not superficial but requires a deep, genuine connection with our Creator.
2. Soul – Love Beyond Circumstances:
Our training emphasizes resilience, and in the same vein, the soul’s love is unwavering. As we face challenges inside the gym or outside of it, Mark’s teaching encourages a love for the Lord that goes beyond any circumstance, reflecting God’s constant love for us.
3. Mind – Love in Understanding:
Practicing Krav Maga involves strategic thinking, and Mark 12:30 emphasizes loving God with all our mind. This challenges us to understand His teachings and apply them in our lives, fostering a thoughtful and intentional love for Him.
4. Strength – Love in Action:
Our martial arts journey is not just theoretical; it’s about translating knowledge into action. Mark’s call to love the Lord with all our strength echoes our commitment to embodying love through our actions, both in self-defense and in everyday life.
5. Unconquerable Love – The Ultimate Goal:
Just as we strive for unconquerable bodies and minds at Invictus, Mark 12:30 propels us towards an unconquerable love. It’s a love that withstands trials, fuels perseverance, and radiates from the indomitable spirit cultivated through our training.
Life Application
Knowing about love is one thing, but applying that knowledge in our daily lives is another. Change can be difficult, and growth is never comfortable. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Have you ever heard the adage that the only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time? Well, that’s the best way to start loving the people around you better and the Lord more completely: one step at a time. So, as we start to bring this knowledge to life, there are some key points to keep in mind:
- Love is an action, not a feeling.
- Love doesn’t change based on circumstances.
- We can love people whether we think they deserve it or not.
- If we’re going to love the Lord, He wants us to do it with every part of our being.
Now let’s talk about how to actually make this happen.
There are lots of different ways to show people you love them. In fact, Gary Chapman has written an entire book on five of them. (You can get a copy of his book HERE.) He would tell you that you can show love to people by:
- acts of service
- giving gifts
- quality time
- words of affirmation
- physical touch
So if you’re struggling to put love into action, that’s a great place to start. Just pick one thing off the list and commit to do that each day for the person you love the most.
I’ll give you an example.
Every morning, I take a cup of coffee to Matt when he wakes up. (I wake up WAY before he does, so there’s always coffee ready in the pot by the time I see his lamp click on.) It’s not a big deal, but it’s small gesture, an act of service, every single day that shows him that I love him. Now here’s the kicker with this… Even if I’m upset with him (and, yes, that happens in our marriage too), I still take coffee to him. Every single morning. No matter what.
I do that because my love for him goes well beyond the way I feel at any given moment. Loving him is something I choose to do every single day when I wake up. And that always starts with a cup of coffee.
So take the first bite of the elephant. Pick one thing and do it every day. No excuses. No matter what. Over time, you can try other ways to show love, and you can add to the number of people you are showing love to. Before you know it, you’ll look up and that elephant will be all but gone. Living a life of love will be second nature to you, and you’ll wonder why you waited so long to put love into action.
And loving the Lord is no different.
Take it one step at a time. Start with making a commitment to spend time with Him every single day. No excuses. No matter what. Maybe it’s reading your Bible. Maybe it’s listening to and singing along with your favorite worship songs. Maybe it’s praying. Maybe it’s meditating. That part is up to you. But whatever you decide to do, do it every day without fail.
Once that one thing becomes a habit, add another and another. And before long you’ll notice that loving the Lord with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind has become your natural rhythm. It has started to flow from you as easily as the air that you breathe, and you’ll wonder how you made it through the day without actively loving the Lord at every turn.
And on the days where you mess it all up, just take a deep breath and try again. God knows you’re not perfect, and the best news of all is that He will never love you any more or any less than He does right now.
